Why Higher Education Needs Conscious Design

This project explores how sustainability and responsible design can be systematically integrated into higher education. Specifically, it examines how Conscious Design – a methodological approach that considers social, ecological and ethical aspects – can enrich various formats of digital product education. The goal is to develop approaches that enable students to recognize and account for the societal and environmental impacts of their design decisions.

Three intervention formats study how students engage with sustainability: through short add-on workshops that integrate the topic into software engineering workflows, or via interdisciplinary projects. Researchers observe how Conscious Design shapes students' awareness, decision-making and collaboration.

The project uses Design-Based Research as its methodological foundation, allowing iterative refinement of interventions and analysis of their impact on learning processes. The overarching goal is to create a scalable model that supports future educators in designing digital technologies that are socially responsible and environmentally sustainable.

Overview of Three Interventions

1. Add-on Workshops in Design Education: Short, flexible workshops complement existing design courses by introducing students to sustainability-focused design tools (e.g., inclusive segment maps, ecological journey maps) without restructuring the curriculum. Students begin early to consider environmental and societal impacts in their creative processes.
2. Integrating Responsible Design into Software Engineering Courses: Software engineering curricula often neglect sustainability. Conscious Design methods extend a semester-long agile software engineering course (iPraktikum) in two steps: (1) a brief introductory workshop during the first week, and (2) deeper integration into the UI/UX workflow, where students apply the methods in real projects with industry partners. Sustainability thus becomes part of the iterative design process.
3. Interdisciplinary Module for Sustainable Digital Product Development: In a new project week, “Responsible, Sustainable & Inclusive Digital Product Creation,” students from various disciplines collaborate to address complex societal and ecological challenges in digital product development. Using Conscious Design methods, they learn to apply sustainability practically in digital product creation.
