Incoming Exchange Students: Mathematics
You are enrolled at one of our partner universities and would like to spend one or two exchange semesters abroad studying in the subject area of mathematics? With one of the largest mathematics departments in Germany, the TUM School of Computation, Information and Technology offers you a wide range of professionally challenging courses in English every semester.
From Algebra and Analysis to Probability Theory and Statistics to Scientific Computing, Optimization and Data Science, we cover a wide range of mathematical application areas. In addition, you may take up to 40 percent of your courses from other subject areas. We provide individual advice on your choice of courses and look forward to meeting you in person.
Before Your Stay
As soon as your home university has nominated you to study at TUM for one or two semesters, you need to compile a learning agreement and curriculum for your application to TUM.
Courses
Please note: The courses in Mathematics that will be offered during your exchange semester are generally published four to six weeks prior to the beginning of the semester, i.e., after the application deadline. For your application, we thus recommend that you choose courses that are offered on a regular basis. Please read our Guideline for Choosing Courses, where you will find a list of regularly offered courses.
All courses and seminars offered at the TUM can be found in the Campus Management System TUMonline. WYou do not need to create a TUMonline account to access this information. You can filter out lists of courses in your chosen subject area and view the module handbook for detailed information on the course content, structure, credits (ECTS), recommended prior knowledge, hours, and frequency.
Please click “continue without login” in the login section. Under Exchange Studies Mathematics (98 010), you will find a list of the subjects to choose from.
A minimum of 60 percent of your courses must be in mathematics (preceded by the code MA, CIT41, or CIT51). The other 40 percent can be chosen from other subject areas. Language courses do not count in this ratio.
In agreement with your home university, you can change your course selection after the course offerings for your exchange semester are published, but no later than two weeks after the start of the lecture period.
The German university system differs greatly from that of other countries, and the curriculum is very demanding. We therefore recommend that exchange students limit their workload to 20 to 25 ECTS per semester, language courses excluded.
During Your Stay
Registering for courses
In the subject area of Mathematics, we differentiate between three types of courses: lectures, practice units, and seminars. You can register for lectures and practical courses at the start of the lecture period via TUMonline. To register for seminars, case study courses, or the TUM Data Innovation Lab, you will need to contact the instructor directly to inquire if there is space available, as registration for these types of courses generally takes place one semester in advance due to limited capacity.
Exams
In the subject area of Mathematics, students take their regular examinations at the end of each lecture period. The exams for the winter semester take place in February. Exams for the summer semester take place at the end of July or the beginning of August. You will find the exact dates under examination matters.
We can only offer additional exam dates to exchange students in justified exceptional cases. Exam retakes are neither conducted remotely nor are special arrangements possible.
You must register separately for exams. The registration periods start around mid-May in the summer semester and around mid-November in the winter semester. Please refer to the step-by-step guideline on how to register for exams in TUMonline.
After Your Stay
You can download a Transcript of Records (ToR), stating your successfully completed examinations at the TUM, from TUMonline and print it for your home university after the examination period, when all grades in your TUMonline account are set as valid.
To do so, please log in to your TUMonline account and select “Transcripts” in the “Exams” row. Then select "Print Examination Report" (showing all exams – failed and passed) or "Print Grade Report" (showing only passed exams). The bilingual document lists all modules with grades and ECTS. It is valid without a signature or a stamp.
