Alongside the Association for Computing Machiner's Special Interest Group on Management of Data conference, also known as SIGMOD, the VLDB is the most important international database conference. “This is further proof of the international reputation of TUM's database experts,” says Alfons Kemper, Head of the Department of Computer Science and Professor of Database Systems at TUM until October 2025.
2025 VLDB Test of Time Award for Viktor Leis

Viktor Leis, Andrey Gubichev, Atanas Mirchev, Alfons Kemper, and Thomas Neumann from TUM, as well as Peter Boncz from Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica in the Netherlands (CWI), were honored with the 2025 VLDB Test of Time Award for their paper “How Good Are Query Optimizers, Really?” This award is given to works that have had a lasting impact on the field ten years after their publication. In this case, the award recognizes the groundbreaking analysis of the effectiveness of modern query optimizers.
The paper was first presented at the VLDB 2016 conference. It was written in the context of the HyPer database development at TUM, which has already received two other Test of Time Awards in the last four years: VLDB 2021 for Thomas Neumann's compiler development and International Conference on Data Engineering (ICDE) 2021 for the initial HyPer paper by Alfons Kemper and Thomas Neumann.
Viktor Leis also recently received the ERC's Proof of Concept (POC) Award to prepare his latest work for practical application in technology transfer.
Best Paper & Best Demo: Awards for Innovative Research and Practical Implementation

At VLDB 2025, the TUM paper “AnyBlox: A Framework for Self-Decoding Datasets” received the Best Paper Award. Written by Mateusz Gienieczko, Maximilian Kuschewski, Thomas Neumann, Viktor Leis, and Jana Giceva, the paper presents an innovative framework that automatically decodes datasets and facilitates the analysis of complex data.
TUM was also represented with the demo “UmbraPerf – Profiling Results Tailored for DBMS Developers,” which received the Best Demo Award. Developed by Alexander Beischl and Thomas Neumann, it provides database developers with tailored profiling results that offer in-depth insights into the performance of database management systems.
International Recognition of TUM Database Research
These awards are impressive proof of the international recognition TUM enjoys in the field of database research. Its continued success consolidates its position as a leading institution in this field of research.
TUM database research thus remains a major player in the scientific community and continuously drives forward both basic research and the practical technology transfer of innovative database solutions.
