General Information
Prof. Emmanuel Planas, Deputy Director at the NII Global Liaison Office, gave a presentation about the International Internship Program and research options at NII Tokyo in March 2025.
Please see the NII website for the list of current projects for the upcoming call for applications and get in touch with the NII academic staff directly. In some cases, it is possible to do your project as a Master's thesis abroad, but you first have to discuss this with your NII supervisor.
In one of their application documents, NII requests to indicate a TUM supervisor for the research project, regardless of whether you want to do your project as your thesis or not. Therefore, please add an academic contact person from the subject area Informatics at the CIT, e.g. your former Bachelor's supervisor or a researcher at a suitable chair you know. It does not have to be a professor.
Application Process and Deadlines
Step 1: Application at the CIT
In order to participate in the NII International Internship Program, you first have to apply in the subject area Informatics at the TUM School of Computation, Information and Technology (CIT) for a nomination. The application deadline at the CIT is always earlier than the application deadline at NII:
- Spring 2025 (first call): The application deadline has already passed.
- Fall 2025 (second call): Sunday, October 12, 2025 (23:59 CET)
For internal selection and the following nomination at NII, you have to submit your application via our online application form. Please upload the following documents (in English):
- NII International Internship Program Application Form
- Curriculum vitae
- Bachelor's Transcript of Records
- TUM Master's Transcript of Records
- Study progress plan
- Email correspondence with respective NII researchers
Step 2: Nomination at NII
After your selection, we will nominate you at NII and send all your application documents directly to NII. Approximately six to eight weeks later, we will reach out to you with NII's final decision.
Please note that a nomination by the subject area Informatics at the CIT does not mean that you will be automatically accepted by NII. The selection by NII after your nomination can be quite competitive.
