Student Council Awards Prizes for Excellent Teaching

Every year, the mathematics, physics, informatics, and chemistry student council (MPIC) honors lecturers who demonstrate a special commitment to teaching. On July 18, 2025, the awards for the best courses in the subject areas of informatics and mathematics were presented.

Teaching Awards in Informatics

In informatics, the student council honors the best compulsory lecture and the best elective lecture from the past two semesters. These lecturers were delighted to receive a so-called “TeachInf Award” this year:

Best Compulsory Lecture

Summer Semester 2024: Enterprise Architecture Management and Reference Models | Prof. Luise Pufahl (Professorship of Information Systems)

Winter Semester 2024/25: IT Security | Prof. Claudia Eckert (Chair of IT Security)

Best Elective Lecture 

Summer Semester 2024: System Administration | Dr. Andreas Paul (Digital and Sustainable Transformation)

Winter Semester 2024/25: Level Engineering: Methods and Tools for Creating Game Environments and Level Design | Daniel Dyrda (Associate Professorship of Augmented Reality)

Teaching Awards in Mathematics

In mathematics, the student council awards the “Golden Compass” annually in three categories: “Best Basic Lecture”, “Best Advanced Lecture”, and “Best Exercise Program”. Here are this year’s winners:

Best Basic Lecture

1st place: Linear Algebra 1 | Prof. Gregor Kemper (Chair of Algorithmic Algebra)

2nd place: Geometry | Prof. Jürgen Richter-Gebert (Chair of Geometry and Visualization) and Prof. Tim Nikolai Hoffmann (Professorship of Applied and Computational Topology)

3rd place: Analysis 2 | Prof. Christian Kühn (Chair of Multiscale and Stochastic Dynamics)

Best Advanced Lecture

1st place: Algebraic Geometry II | Prof. Christian Liedtke (Chair of Algebraic Geometry)

2nd place: Applications of Mathematical Biology | Prof. Christina Kuttler (Professorship of Mathematics in Life Sciences)

3rd place: High-Dimensional Statistics | Prof. Mathias Drton (Chair of Mathematical Statistics)

Best Exercise Program

1st place: Linear Algebra 1 | Dr. Fabian Reimers (Chair of Algorithmic Algebra)

2nd place: Numerical Methods for Partial Differential Equations | Dr. Constantin Christof (formerly at the Chair of Optimal Control)

3rd place: High-Dimensional Statistics | Nils Sturma (Chair of Mathematical Statistics)

Special Award

In addition to the Golden Compass, the “Special Award for Commitment During the Orientation Phase” was presented for the first time. The one-time award went to:

Writing Mathematics Correctly | Dr. Florian Lindemann (Chair of Mathematical Optimization) 

Prof. Mathias Drton, Prof. Christina Kuttler, and Prof. Christian Liedtke receive the Golden Compass in the category "Best Advanced Lecture".
