The information below is relevant for all incoming students who would like to spend one or more exchange semesters at the TUM School of CIT, regardless of their subject area.
Please note: For exchange (non-degree) studies, we are only able to accept students enrolled at one of our partner universities who have been nominated for an exchange stay (i.e., no freemovers or visiting students). Students who have received a scholarship from the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD) to study in Germany or have been nominated via a DAAD program are also eligible. The TUM does not offer any other forms of study for students who are not seeking a degree from TUM.

Examination period: after the lecture period
Summer Semester: April 1 until September 30
Lecture period: approximately mid-April until mid/late-July
Examination period: after the lecture period
Current semester dates (including lecture and examination periods) can be found at Examination Matters and Modules.
1. Application at home university
If you are interested in becoming an exchange student at the TUM School of CIT, your home university must have an exchange agreement with the respective subject area at the TUM. Please inform yourself about the application and selection process at your home university.
2. Nomination to TUM
Once you have been selected, the exchange coordinator of your home university has to nominate you at TUM. A nomination does not automatically mean that you will be accepted.
3. Application at TUM
Once you have been nominated, you can apply to TUM. Information on the application procedure is available at the TUM Global & Alumni Office.
4. Reply from TUM
Please note that the reviewing process after the application deadline (May 15 or October 31) usually takes between five and six weeks. We may contact you during this period if questions arise regarding your application.
If you have been accepted, you will receive an official acceptance letter from the TUM. Congratulations!
At the TUM School of CIT, 1 ECTS credit equals 30 hours of work. A regular semester consists of 30 ECTS credits with 14 weeks of teaching. As an exchange student, we do not expect you to take the full semester workload of 30 ECTS. For more information about our credit system, please check the TUM glossary.
The TUM grading scale is as follows:
- grade 1.0 up to 1.5 is “very good”
- grade 1.6 to 2.5 is “good”
- grade 2.6 to 3.5 is “satisfactory”
- grade 3.6 to 4.0 is “sufficient”
- from 4.1 is “fail”
The TUM School of CIT provides experienced TUM students as mentors offering advice and support to our new international students. Each subject area has its own mentoring program and supports its own students.
If you are interested in a TUM-wide program for international exchange students, please have a look at our International Campus Life which is organized centrally by the TUM Global & Alumni Office.
We encourage all incoming exchange students to learn German during their stay with us. The TUM Language Center offers a wide range of German courses on different levels throughout the semester as well as intensive courses in the lecture-free period.
