Incoming Exchange Students:
Electrical and Computer Engineering
You are enrolled at one of our partner universities and would like to spend one or two exchange semesters abroad studying in the subject area of Electrical and Computer Engineering? We would be delighted to welcome you to one of the most innovative and interdisciplinary schools at the Technical University of Munich (TUM).
At the TUM School of Computation, Information and Technology (CIT), you will benefit from a wide range of courses taught in English in areas such as Embedded Systems, Signal Processing, Robotics, Machine Learning, and Communication Technology. You can also take courses in other subject areas, allowing you to tailor your studies to your interests.
Our programs combine theoretical foundations with practical applications to equip you for future challenges in both research and industry. Alongside your academic experience, you will join a vibrant international community, providing you with opportunities to enhance your intercultural skills.
Before Your Stay
As soon as your home university has nominated you to study at TUM for one or two semesters, you need to compile a learning agreement and study plan for your application to TUM.
Academic & Language Requirements
The subject area of Electrical and Computer Engineering offers over 400 courses each semester, with half of them taught in English. Most of our English courses are designed for master's level students, and we have fewer bachelor's courses available in English. If you are an undergraduate student interested in taking master's courses, you will need to have completed at least two years of prior studies in Electrical and Computer Engineering.
We request an English or German language certificate at B1 level. For further information on acceptable proof of language proficiency, visit the TUM Global & Alumni Office.
Courses
Please note: The application deadline for exchange programs at TUM is before the publication of our course offerings. Courses are typically published in late July for the winter semester and early February for the summer semester. As a result, you will need to select your initial courses based on the offerings from the previous academic year, which can serve as a reliable indicator for the upcoming courses. However, it is important to have alternative options in mind as well.
Click “continue without login” in the login section. Under Exchange Studies Electrical and Computer Engineering (98 500), you will find a list of subjects to choose from.
We expect that at least 60 percent of your workload (i.e., number of courses) consists of courses in Electrical and Computer Engineering. All our courses can be identified by the module number EIxx, CITx3 or CITx4. Please indicate the module number in your learning agreement and study plan. Exchange students are allowed to take almost all courses in our subject area (except EI60xxx and modules from the elite master's program in Neuroengineering).
The other 40 percent of your workload can be courses from different subject areas at TUM.
Labs and seminars have limited capacity, so we cannot guarantee availability for exchange students.
If permitted by your home university, we recommend a total workload of 20-25 ECTS per semester.
If you want to complete your final thesis in the subject area of Electrical and Computer Engineering, you must select your topic and find a supervisor before you start your exchange semester(s) at TUM.
During Your Stay
Confirmation of Arrival
If you require a signature on your confirmation of arrival, please upload your home university's template to incoming-ece(at)cit.tum.de. Once we process your request, we will respond via email. Please be aware that we do not sign confirmations until the exact day of your first academic activity at TUM, such as orientation events or the welcome meeting.
Exams
At TUM, you must register for exams in all types of courses. Each TUM School has its own exam schedule. In the subject area of Electrical and Computer Engineering, written exams begin in the last week of the lecture period and continue until the start of the next semester. You can find the exam timetable under Examinations before each exam period.
After Your Stay
You can download a Transcript of Records (ToR), stating your successfully completed examinations at TUM in TUMonline and print it for your home university after the examination period, i.e., when all grades in your TUMonline account are set as valid.
To do so, please log in to your TUMonline account and select “Transcripts” in the “Exams” row. Then select "Print Examination Report" (showing all exams – failed and passed) or "Print Grade Report" (showing only passed exams). The bilingual document lists all modules with grades and ECTS. It is valid without signature and stamp.
If your home university requires that our Incoming Exchange Coordinator send the ToR directly (only in rare cases), then please contact us, indicating the respective email address of your home university.
